About
Lewis John Mason (LewJohn) is a ceramic artist from Thirsk, North Yorkshire, whose practice centres around wheel-thrown vessels, surface experimentation and material response. Working primarily in stoneware, the work balances structure with instinctive making — allowing texture, repetition and movement to emerge through the process of throwing itself.
Experimentation plays a significant role within the practice, particularly through layering slips, glazing techniques and surface treatments onto thrown forms. Recent works have explored the relationship between music, rhythm and ceramic making, translating atmosphere and repetition into texture, colour and mark making across the surface of the vessel.
Alongside studio practice, Mason maintains a strong interest in ceramics education, with ambitions to develop workshops, throwing lessons and future teaching opportunities centred around accessible, process-driven approaches to clay. Long term, the goal is to establish a dedicated pottery studio space for both making and teaching.
